Keep Going House: an effortness reimagining of a modest post-war cottage
Keep Going House is a thoughtful adaptation of a post-war cottage, sited on a landscape rich block amongst the characterful fabric in one of Brisbane’s Western suburbs. Designed for a family of four, the project explores how an existing home can be transformed through strategic interventions that work within a restrained budget.

The Beginning: Client Vision & Site Context
Quiet, thoughtful interventions to unlock a post-war home for contemporary living
The original home sat on relatively busy street but had its own advantages - a long, flat suburban block flanked by established trees, with ample green space and an opportunity to create a private suburban oasis. The modest existing layout was very much of its time - a separated kitchen, two modest bedrooms, and a central bathroom shared by all.
The family wanted to see how the cottage could be modified and added-to lightly to create a 3-bed, 2-bath space suitable for contemporary living. They weren’t afraid of compact space, but they wanted a sense of intentional living - where everything has its place; a home that could ebb-and-flow through the busyness and chaos of family life, all marked by a striking sense of connection to greenery.
Our Design Response
Right-sized family living, and a central spine that connects it all
The design response invites a direction connection through the site - from the generous front yard, through the centre of the home, to the oasis-like backyard. The idea of a central spine becomes paramount - feeding directly into living, dining and bedroom zones, and linking the everyday routine with the external environment.
Importantly, the project maximised the existing footprint of the home, with only a small extension required to facilitate the improved layout and added scope.
